Kent's Musical Journey

Kent's love of music began at an early age. Both of his parents, and his three brothers, were all music lovers and participated in many local music activities. Kent grew up singing in church and in school groups, and also played in the school band. By the time he reached 8th grade, he was giving trumpet lessons to other students.

Kent completed his undergraduate degree in Music Education at Mars Hill College in North Carolina and earned his Master's in Music from VCU in Richmond, VA. From there, he began teaching in the classroom setting. After four years of teaching beginning and advanced students in public schools, Kent started his own five-piece band and traveled the east coast for the next three years playing piano, bass, and trumpet. He then returned to the public schools as a Band Director and had the opportunity to teach all band instruments to students in grades 4-12 while continuing to teach privately and perform regularly.

Kent takes pride in continuing the legacy of music that his parents started. His family is full of musicians: his wife as a singer, and his four sons have all earned music degrees. He is also grateful to be able to go beyond his family by instilling a love for music in his students. Kent believes that all people are capable of playing music, and he likes to work with each of his students at their own pace and for their own enjoyment.

I like to work with my students at their own pace and for their own enjoyment.
