Steven's Musical Journey
A talented multi-instrumentalist, Steven started his musical journey at the age of 7 when he began taking private piano lessons. In his early teen years, he was introduced to the guitar, and his love for music and music education quickly began to grow. In high school, Steven took advanced-placement music theory and was the first chair guitarist in his high school jazz band. He started to get his first teaching opportunites around this time.
Though he was accepted into the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Steven ultimately decided to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, where he took private jazz guitar lessons under Mike Ess. During this time, Steven formed two successful bands and also joined a popular hip hop group. Each of these ensembles was comprised of other outstanding musicians who have gone on to pursue professional careers in music as well. Steven graduated with his Bachelor's degree in 2013.
After graduating from VCU, Steven continued his musical career by playing guitar in his local church and being a member and "hired gun" for multiple funk/rock/and R&B groups in the DMV area. In 2017, Steven released his debut solo album, Soullow.
In addition to his success as a performer and music artist, Steven has now been teaching music for twenty years. Steven has worked with students of all ages, from 4-year-olds to adults in their 60s, and has taught a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin, banjo and voice. Steven genuinely enjoys sharing the gift of music with any and every student. He firmly believes that we are all students throughout our lives, and regardless of his experience and expertise, he still sees himself as a student and loves learning from those he teaches. Steven considers it an honor and a privilege to share the gift of music and educate youth and adults, and he is forever grateful for that opportunity.
When he isn't teaching, Steven performs nationally and internationally with his signed bands, Stonebrook and Dance Candy.
