Jonathan's Musical Journey
Jonathan was born in Manila, Philippines and started his musical journey at the young age of 4. During his childhood, Jonathan was exposed to many different types of music, including groups such as the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Glen Miller Orchestra, Xavier Cugat, and Duke Ellington. At age 15, Jonathan picked up the drumsticks for the first time and also received his first drum set as a gift. He started intensely practicing the drums, and he got together with friends to form a group called Cold Heat. The band, whose influences included Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck, wrote, performed, and recorded some original compositions and made several appearances on daytime TV and public radio.
Jonathan went on to study Music at the prestigious University of the Philippines College of Music, majoring in percussion with a minor in piano. During his undergraduate studies, Jonathan played with the UP jazz ensemble as well as the Manila Symphony Orchestra as a drummer and percussionist. He performed with the Rage Band, well-known as the top band in the Philippines. He also had the opportunity to perform with Martin Nievera at a special collaborative event in front of an audience of over 30,000, and has played with Lea Salonga and the famous pop singer Gino Padilla as well as the Romy Posadas jazz group.
While he's thrived as a performer, Jonathan's musical skillset doesn't stop there. He has over 40 years of teaching experience, and has had students of widely varying ages and skill levels. He teaches drums, piano, guitar, and bass guitar, and has seen much success as an instructor as a result of witnessing his students' own growth and success.
